TRANSPAC: Day 6

Sunday's position report didn't look so go for our team, at least from the "bean counter's" perspective. My dad assured me that everything was all right, that "race tactics" were being employed.

...kind of like the way my dad shoots pool, I suppose, or why Lance Armstrong doesn't wear the yellow jersey on each stage of the Tour de France. Somehow those two always come out on top when the game is coming to a close, though; cheer on!

Go Brown Sugar!

1st SOAP OPERA
2nd BQUEST
3rd SUPER GNAT
4th DIABLO
5th BROWN SUGAR
6th JACARE
7th SHOWDOWN
8th IATAIA

Comment: Hi, I'm enjoying your blog focusing on Brown Sugar in the Transpac. I'm actually Val Erickson's godson. She refered me to your site. Thanks for posting all the immages. It's fascinating to see Paul's journey so well articulated with the use of technology. It used to be that the Transpac was invisible until the sails started creeping over the horizon. this sure puts a different spin on it. I'm a little confused though. I wonder if you could post an explanation on how the standings are calculated. you have Soap Opera in the lead, but it is clearly east and north of Supergiant, which you have as #3. The finish line is south and west, so it seems to me that something is wrong here. I've taken the time to get out the ruler and measure the distance from Honolulu to the top left corner of each tack icon. For Brown Sugar I measured to the circle. Of course I could get a lot more accurate if I knew Honolulu's longitude and lattitude. This isn't anything scientific, but here are my results, with approximate distances to Honolulu in centimeteres 1st Super Giant with 15.2 cm, 2nd Soap Opera with 15.25 cm, 3rd Bquest with 15.3 cm, 4th Showdown with 15.6 cm, 5th Brown Sugar with 15.7 cm, 6th Jacare with 15.8 cm, 7th Iataia with 15.9 cm, 8th Diablo with 16 cm I'm assuming the maps are scaled correctly. If they are, there are some big differences to your list, pasted below: 1st SOAP OPERA, 2nd BQUEST, 3rd SUPER GNAT, 4th DIABLO, 5th BROWN SUGAR, 6th JACARE, 7th SHOWDOWN, 8th IATAIA, The most striking difference are Diablo, which you have as 4th and I measured to be last of those plotted. Also I have Showdown as 4th and you have her sailing 7th. It looks like our favorite, Brown Sugar is in 5th no matter what. Thanks for the charts, they're fun and interesting, although the standings are somewhat strange. chris
